Wk 3 - Defining a Target Market
A target market is a specific group of consumers that has common characteristics to which a product or service is aimed. These characteristics can include the consumers' age, gender, behaviors, lifestyle, values, and more. Businesses research their target market to make their efforts and impact more effective. With a target market, businesses are able to advertise efficiently, improve their products, and avoid wasted resources. I researched three different businesses to discover their target markets.
The first business I researched was Supreme, a well-known skateboard and streetwear brand. Supreme originally started in Manhattan, New York, as a local skateboard shop and community. Their target market early on was mostly kids and young adult skaters. As the brand became more well-known globally, the brand was gravitated towards skaters, punks, and "hip-hop" heads mostly from ages 16-30. Over the years, Supreme has done a good job of catering to its audience by keeping up with trends and culture. After looking through their Instagram and website, which are the main platforms they use, a common trend I noticed was that they post their lookbooks or visuals of the clothing and accessories they are releasing for the season before release to build "hype" for their products. Many times, they have well-known skateboarders or even famous celebrities and artists who model for the lookbooks. The second business I researched was RAW Nutrition, a fitness and supplement company. RAW Nutrition is well-known in the fitness community, especially with its affiliation with famous athletes, including Chris Bumstead, a professional bodybuilder. Their target audience includes both males and females who are interested in fitness, health, and self-improvement. After researching through their main platforms, such as Instagram and TikTok, I mainly noticed the way they advertise. They usually display their products in photo or video form, which includes many "motivational" quotes and visuals. They also have videos of famous athletes trying their supplements or doing workouts in their clothing. The third business I researched was PQ Performance, a performance shop based in Los Angeles. PQ Performance is an auto performance shop that is mostly known for working on different influencers and artists' cars. They specialize mainly in working with BMWs and other European brands like Audi and Mercedes. Their target audience is people who have an interest in European cars or vehicle performance. The main platforms they use are Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. Their content consists of showcasing their work, and they also collaborate with growing influencers or artists. Many times they also host events to showcase their services. Overall, they do a great job in reaching their audience who have an interest in automotive performance. (Link: https://pqperformance.net/)
